Double Indemnity - Analysis
Brick - Analysis

What Titles? - 25th Hour

Although the film 25th Hour is not a thriller, I do believe its job roles appear simply. In an opening sequence of a film, there are many job roles which are revealed. Normally we firstly see the producers name so in addition to the film, 25th Hour, Touch Stone Pictures are the producers. Touchstone Pictures, established in 1984, is one of several alternate film labels of The Walt Disney Company
Besides, other job roles will follow like the directors of the film will appear for instance Spike Lee and then the director of photography Rodrigo Prieto and then the editors name for example Barry Alexander Brown. Depending on the film they will show other job roles like the composer of music, Terence Blanchard as the Original music score. Also the star actors will appear through the title sequence for example Rosario Dawson as Naturelle Riviera, Anna Paquin as Mary D'Annunzio and Brian Cox as James Brogan. Last of all the name of the film will show in this case it would be 25th Hour.
There are various other job titles such as:
Script Supervisor
Stunt Coordinator
Casting Director
Production Designer
Art Director
Assistant art director
Set Designer
Illustrator
Set Decorator
Set Dresser

Location Research

.
This image is of parked cars in a car park. This image has been well composed as the cars lie across the centre of the image. The black convertible car is the main focus pull for the reason that it is sounded by silver cars. Besides, this questions the viewer as to why the black convertible car is left solo.
This image is in a field, it shows a train track surrounded by trees. I believe this a good image as the sky and the grass have an even arrangement and thee trees look as though they are slicing through the sky and the grass. It seems as though it is almost breaking the bond.
This image was taken in a garage which shows a car covered over. This image creates a peculiar atmosphere as most cars aren’t usually covered over when they are in a garage. Also the frame like light peeping through the garage door catches our eye and we then are led to wonder what is behind the door.
This image is of a rusty gate which is overlooking lonely roads. The black cable tie is eye catching as we wonder why it is there. However this image would be a great location for background shot as it shows texture and pattern.
This image is of an alley way. Not only does it make an audience believe it must be someone’s journey, but a viewer may want to know what is hanging around the corner. The ice also makes the image dangerous as you would believe someone would run down an alley if it was a thriller.

The Sixth Sense - Analysis

The setting of Sixth Sense is very obvious at the start of the film. It s set in a normal house with a basement. It has been cunningly created as we see the flint of the light bulb gradually getting brighter and we see a female character walk down the basement stairs to get a bottle of wine. The setting has been cleverly created as we are not immediately led into the storyline.
Costumes and props
The main props we visualise are wine bottles. The wine bottles are associated with celebration which is cleverly contrasted by the male who interrupts the two characters. The male character in his underwear is an unusual costume for most thrillers, yet the couple are wearing the average style of going out clothes.
Interesting camera work / editing
The director of the film Sixth Sense has worked extremely hard to refer to the composition of the shots. For example the rule of thirds has been used when the female character is in the basement selecting a bottle of wine. Also the flint in the light bulb is greatly thought-provoking as it is unusual for the opening shot to be of a light bulb getting brighter. An audience would be heavily pulled by this wonderful decision which engages us to believe there will be an emergent effect of continuous upbeat scenarios happening.
Story – and how the opening sets the story up
Like wise the story is set up by us visualising the male character breaking entry to the couple’s house. As an audience we are freaked out by this abnormal event. We feel bizarre towards this which makes the opening sequence have a decent appeal.
Genre (thriller) – and how the opening suggests it
The Sixth Sense opening sequence connotes it is a thriller by the shots of the smashed window on the floor. The camera almost follows the trail of the broken items. Not only does this construct suspense. But it kind of makes its viewers plan ahead of the film to what else is going to unfold. The smashed glass could also suggest that sharp and corrupt way the director has composed the opening sequence skilfully.
How any characters are introduced?
The characters are not all introduced properly however the main character which creates a shock is the one who breaks entry in to the house. Our first shot of him is in the bathroom where he looks extremely traumatised and hunted. As an audience we also feel for this character for the reason that he is in such a bad state and he is unclothed except from his underwear.
Any special effects or a particular shot you really like.
I personally like the shots of the male character exiting his house and walking down the street. Some of the time character is not visible to the viewer because he is walking past bushes. I like this shot because it also adds to the uncertainty of what exactly is going to happen. The greenery furthermore adds to our thoughts because the colour green is usually linked with peacefulness and we believe the character is on an important mission which is not so positive.

Analysis of Memento 2
The title of the film when and how does it appear on the screen?
The title of Memento appears after a couple of seconds, it immediately fascinates out attention by the shifting colour transition from royal blue towards a pale blue colour. The background of the title is firstly black; however the title softy overlaps a moving image of a male’s hand holding a picture. The way the title, Memento blends in with the image in the background gives us, as an audience a feel of stiffness as the colours clash. This creates high standards for the film as the director has played a lot of attention towards the detail of the title.
When and how is the setting / location revealed to the viewer?
Following on, the setting of the film Memento is not discovered in the first part of the title sequence as it is not reveled heavily of the location or where the film is set. The dark, but bloody colour scheme may be the cause of a viewer being led to confusion. On a basic note, the use of the close up shots makes it harder for us to piece together the setting as it gives us a smaller frame of what is happening in the film. As an audience we feel annoyed at the directors decision on the constant close up shots, however this leaves us in integrity of why it has been constructed in this way and what is going to unfold in the story.
Key props – what shot types are used to reveal these to the viewer?
In more depth, the use of the close up shots of various props such as images, a camera, and glasses add a certain gloom towards the audience, we begin to believe there is a murder investigation due to the stereotypical crime scene props. However the prime give away towards the suggestion of a murder investigation is for the reason that we see a large amount of blood dripping down a wall. This may make an audience feel at ease as this is not an everyday setting which is portrayed in films.
How do the actors’ names appear on the screen?
The title font is not so clear though it looks similar to Times New Roman font. The style of the title font could connote that the film Memento may be of an old fashioned style as that font style is less commonalty used. The actor’s names appear in the same way of the title Memento though the actor’s names do not start off as being royal blue; they are pale blue and fade in to one another. As a viewer we get the impression that there could be a series of stages to conclude the climax of the film. Not only do we gain the sense of an old fashioned style film, we also may believe that there are flash backs within the storyline as the text flash out at us before fading into another actors name.
Describe the overall camerawork and editing in the opening sequence of ‘Memento’
Camerawork and editing in the opening sequence plays a significant part in setting the atmosphere of the film. The fast motion of the rewinding scene of the male being shot is a good example of they way editing sets a gory atmosphere. As a view we believe that the murder doesn’t really add up correctly as it rewinds, this gives an audience a sense of a murder being recounted. The close up shots of vital props, for instance glasses and the clothing which the characters are wearing, correspond as evidence as what a viewer may conclude the ending of the film. As opening sequences usually have a soundtrack to set the tone, Memento follows this editing rule of adding a soundtrack. The soundtrack gives us a thrill as it seems very daring and makes us feel uncomfortable as an audience. Similar to the soundtrack, the slow paced clips hooks us in to establish the ominous mood.
How does the opening sequence relate to the rest of the film?
The opening sequence fairly relates to the rest of the film due to the key props, these props give us clues to how the several characters are portrayed in the film. As a viewer may perceive there is a murder investigation for the reason that there are gory shots and tools which a crime scene investigator would use. They stereotypical long coat used by the blonde male also plays on a viewers mind that maybe that could be related to the crime scene.

(EBI) Induction Tasks

Some may argue that the Push A Button task was not so great for the reason that it was our first task in the induction. In my opinion, I believe that the reason why it was not so great was because I was new to Media as a subject so I was unfamiliar with the equipment. It was hard for me to pick up the new skills to develop the Push A Button advert. However due to my peers helping me to understand how to use the software on the Apple Mac's, I then gained the knowledge and progressed from there to pass it on in other tasks.
(WWW) Induction Tasks

During the induction tasks, I believe the Jobsite task went extremely well. We all worked well as a team, so we managed to create a brilliant advert. I personally thought I contributed to quite a few decent ideas which developed the advert further. Besides, I learnt how to create a voice over using the microphone in the Apple Mac. Also my group were all punctual and attended the lunch time session where we all had a go at editing a few shots of the advert using iMove.
