Conventions of an opening sequence

An opening sequence main intention is to grab our attention as viewers. An opening sequence is set to establish the mood or even the tone of the film. It is also often six minutes long which familiarizes the viewer with the setting.

I have taken screen grabs from various different thrillers, which I feel that show the conventions of an opening sequence.

•Normally has a soundtrack to set the tone
•Slower paced shots – leading us into the narrative
•Establishes the mood and tone of the film
•Familiarises a viewer with the setting
•It has to hook its audience in the first 5 minutes
